Management of people affected by the project
NHPC has provided exemplary and responsible social support to people affected by the Nachtigal project throughout the project’s development and construction phases through:
The payment of a fair and transparent compensation to people whose property or goods were impacted by the Nachtigal project
The compensation process was conducted in close collaboration with the authorities and without any difficulty. The goods of the people affected by the Nachtigal project were compensated according to the most advantageous scale between Cameroonian standards, international best practices and the reality of market prices.
The relocation of displaced families in improved conditions of safety and comfort
NHPC has made every effort to minimize the number of physical displacements. Only 6 families were displaced; they had the choice between a financial compensation or the construction of a new home and all opted for resettlement houses built by NHPC in the place of their choice.
The support of affected farmers to restore and improve their agricultural production
In addition to the financial compensation they received, the farmers impacted by the Nachtigal project benefited from seeds and support from NHPC’s agronomists and a local NGO (AGRO PME) to restore and improve their livelihoods. This support includes training in agricultural techniques and monitoring and evaluation missions in the fields.
The reconversion of affected sand workers
In addition to financial compensation, NHPC has set up with the support of a local NGO (OPH) a program to support the reconversion of sand workers impacted by the Nachtigal project. This programme includes training in financial management and entrepreneurship, as well as the development and monitoring of individual reconversion projects.
NHPC has already witnessed some success stories of reconversion especially in the fields of agriculture, livestock, and small businesses.
The support of affected farmers to restore and improve their agricultural production
In addition to financial compensation, NHPC has helped volunteer fishermen with the acquisition of modern fishing equipment on the one hand, and training in new fishing techniques adapted to the fishery created by the company on the other. Those who have chosen to abandon their activities were supported in setting up reconversion projects that can guarantee them equivalent income.
NHPC has set up an environmental and social team in Batchenga since 2014 to be close to the populations of the Nachtigal project area. This has allowed the company to establish a dialogue with them and to address their requests.
A Grievances Mechanism has been implemented since 2015 and has made it possible to support more than 1500 people.
